Assistive Technology

Assistive technology or adaptive technology (AT) is an umbrella term that includes assistive, adaptive, and rehabilitative devices for people with disabilities, and the process used in selecting, locating, and using them. AT promotes greater independence by enabling people to perform tasks that they were formerly unable to accomplish, or had great difficulty accomplishing, by providing enhancements to or changed methods of interacting with the technology needed to accomplish such tasks.

Rhode Island has a long and proud history of ensuring that students with exceptionalities receive support and intervention to achieve high expectations and exit public education as productive citizens, life-long learners, and contributing members of the workforce.

The Rhode Island Department of Education contains the Office of Student, Community, and Academic Supports, which is responsible for advancing the education of children and youth with disabilities who require special education.
